Herne Bay Trip: A Joyful Outing for People Living with Dementia and Their Carers

On Sunday 7th September 2025, ADSS took over 100 people they support living with dementia and with their carers, who all enjoyed a memorable day trip to Herne Bay, Kent. The coastal town, with its beach, Victorian pier and welcoming community atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for an enriching and uplifting experience.

The day began with a warm welcome aboard the coaches, where conversation and anticipation set the tone for the outing. Upon arrival, the group was welcomed by the refreshing sea breeze and the sound of waves along the shore. They gathered at Captain Jack’s for a traditional fish and chip lunch, before strolling along the promenade. Many shared fond seaside memories, with one participant even revisiting her childhood home.

Some of the group headed to the pier for crabbing, while others enjoyed live music and dancing at the bandstand, where the Jolly Good Timers gave a lively performance that had everyone joining in, even forming a conga line.

As the day unfolded, it became clear that the outing had a profound impact. Carers reflected on how such experiences allowed them to connect more deeply with their loved ones, while participants expressed gratitude for the chance to enjoy companionship, laughter, and new experiences together. Candid photographs taken throughout the day will serve as treasured reminders and prompts for reminiscence in the future.

As the sun began to set, the group gathered at the pier for the traditional photo and raffle. Smiles, stories, and shared reflections marked the close of a day that will be long remembered.

The success of the trip highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for people living with dementia and their carers to enjoy meaningful activities together. Beyond lifting spirits, the day strengthened connections and reinforced the value of community.

Trips like this play a vital role in supporting not only individuals living with dementia but also their carers, offering moments of escape, togetherness, and support in a safe, fun setting.

ADSS extends heartfelt thanks to all who attended, and to the volunteers and staff who helped make the day such a success. Here’s to more days filled with sunshine, friendship, and the little things that truly make a difference.
