Dementia Buddy Scheme

This hugely popular and successful project was first set up in partnership with Darent Valley Hospital.  The project supports people with dementia who are patients in the hospital. The main aim is to improve the overall experience for people with dementia during their hospital stay and to ensure that their dignity & abilities are maintained.

The co-ordinator lead and supporting twenty volunteers  work with people in the wards at Darent Valley, providing company, stimulation and one-to-one attention, especially at meal times.

The scheme has been so successful that the project is now been introduced at Medway Hospital.

A Message from Nicola Lambert - Coordinator for Medway Hospital

Dementia Buddys provide a friendly face, a listening ear and companionship  as well as support during mealtimes to patients living with dementia at Medway Maritime Hospital. The buddys are fully trained volunteers who have the qualities and skills that are necessary when engaging positively with people with dementia. The buddies spend time on the ward giving quality time and helping to make a considerable positive difference to the overall hospital experience for the patients as well as providing some reassurance to families that their loved ones will have a visitor when they cant be there.

If you feel that you can give just 4 hours a week and become part of our Dementia Buddy Scheme at Medway Maritime Hospital please call Nicola or Jackie on 07939 308573 / 01459781981

Please volunteer, get involved and make a difference
